Rules

Welcome to the Ordly league!

The game Ordly is a competition-friendly version of Wordle, and has pretty much the same rules. Wordle is Master Mind with letters instead of colors.

You get eight attempts of guessing the secret word. Each guess has to be a valid five-letter word. If you get green color, it means the letter is in the correct spot. If you get yellow color, it means the letter is in the word but in the wrong spot. Gray means the letter is not in the word.

The button with the question-mark will give a random letter that together with your other letters becomes a valid and still playable word - if any word exists with that letter combination. It will only give you the solution when no other word is possible. The question mark is a quick way out when you are fed up of testing letters, but it will not give you a competition advantage.

The word lists used are the same as for the game Wordfeud. We try the best we can to keep them the same version too. For instance, the English word list is the SOWPODS list, and the Norwegian list is the NSF-list of the Norwegian Scrabble Association.

The game

The game is found on this web page: Ordly

Log in before you play. If you don't log in, you will still be able to play, but you end up playing games that do not count in the league.

You will get 9 points if you finish in move 1, 8 points if you finish in move 2, and down to 2 points if you finish in move 8. You can see these numbers at the left of the screen. You get 1 point for playing 8 attempts, and zero points for not playing. If you get more points than your opponent that day, you win the duel.

If your opponent does not play, the result will be set after three days (during night time) and will be a victory for you. After you have played, the game will disappear while you wait for your opponent to play, then be available again, this is to avoid that your opponent cheats by breaking into your account. Every Ordly duel has an unique solution, for you and your opponent only, and there will be no other way to find the solution than playing the game. In general, we have done some effort to build a cheat free league. Your contribution to that is to not use word lists while playing, only before and after games, along the same Brains Only principle as our Wordfeud rules.

Usual words are more likely to be the solution. 'Usual words' are mainly the five-letter words that was used at least once in a comment field at this web site during its first ten years. Lower divisions will have almost only usual words, while higher divisions will have a bigger share of unusual words. This does not apply for Finnish Ordly, it has fewer words, so all words are considered equal.

Player etiquette

It is in players’ own hands to ensure the fairest possible tournament, by being sure to complete all your own games. This is not difficult – as noted above, you have 72 hours to play each game, so it is good practice to get in the habit of taking your turn at the same time every day.

Though it is not against the rules, it is not considered good sportsmanship to deliberately delay playing your games. Repeatedly waiting until the last few hours to play is frowned upon. Similarly, it is likely to annoy your opponents if you let games build up but then only play the oldest one while leaving others still unplayed.

Taking a break

If you know beforehand that you will struggle to complete all your games in a given season – if you are going on holiday, for example – the best thing to do is to head to “Your page” and then press the “Skip the next tournament” button.

You will then be excluded from the next tournament, but will be automatically enrolled in the one after that. Using that tool, you will also reappear in whichever division you would have been in had you not skipped a tournament. If you have a good reason for missing games in the middle of a tournament, please try to let the Judge know so that he can take that into account.

Ordly judge

As in most WLoH leagues, Ordly English has a judge – who is a different person from the game creator – who volunteers their time to answer player queries, report bugs and other technical issues, and intervene if necessary to ensure fair promotions and relegations at the end of each season.

The best way to contact the Ordly Judge is to post a comment in your group, so that the Judge can see it and respond there. You can also contact the Judge by email at ordlyjudge@cyberdude.com.

Judging at the end of the tournament

In Ordly English, by default, the table uses the following tiebreakers to determine the final placings: 1) Total points; 2) Spread; 3) Total score; 4) Player rating.

However, at the end of each tournament, the Judge will usually go through every group to review the results and, if necessary, edit promotion and relegation.

As in Wordfeud, you cannot secure an advantage by not completing your games. However, nor should a player be penalised as a result of one or more of their opponents defaulting – after all, it is not their fault.

Examples of situations in which the Ordly Judge may intervene in the table at the end of a season include:

  • Where a player only tops the table – or moves out the relegation zone – due to an opponent’s 0-X forfeited game moving them narrowly ahead of another player based on spread.
  • Where a player has missed most of their games but played others, therefore disadvantaging those players who did not benefit from a walkover against that particular opponent.
  • Occasionally, where LoBot has made a mistake with its automated calculations, resulting in the wrong player(s) appearing in the top or bottom places.
Actions taken by the Judge in these or similar scenarios may include changing who is promoted or relegated, or, if the Judge deems appropriate, promoting or relegating additional players from a particular group.

Any player who has forfeited games during a season without explanation risks, at the Judge’s discretion, being excluded from promotion. Missing two or more games in a season may result in all that player’s scores being set to 0, and/or automatic relegation.

If a player misses all, or nearly all, their games in a tournament, the Ordly Judge will usually deactivate them for the next season and post a comment in their group, explaining what he has done, and inviting the player to reactivate their profile if they do indeed intend to participate fully in the next tournament.

As always, the Judge’s decision is final.

The web site runs other leagues, mostly in game apps. This is a list of the other leagues, with the start time of the next season. You can sign up for either of these under ´Your Page´, scroll to ´Other languages and games´

Support WLoH

Development of WLoH is done during my own spare time, with no pay and with expenses for database rental. It's fine; money was never my motivation, but it is now possible to support WLoH economically. Donations give access to extra statistics and training material for WF and Scrabble. A donation of 90 NOK, 15$, 12 euro or 10£ buys you a one-year access, provided that you don't break our rules. It may take a bit from the time of your donation until you gain access. Donation is possible directly to bank account . Please mention your username in the comment; otherwise I won't know whom I should grant access. If you buy an Eskil Aasmul-novel, it counts as donation, but unfortunately they are not yet translated.

Two principles apply to WLoH: One should always be able to play here for free, and the contestants compete on equal terms, regardless of sponsorship or lack thereof.
